The Care Workers Union (CWU) unequivocally condemns the recent riots across the UK, driven by blatant acts of racism, Islamophobia, and far-right extremism. These violent disruptions represent more than civil unrest; they are direct attacks on the fundamental values of dignity and respect for all individuals, particularly targeting our communities’ most vulnerable members.
In the midst of these crises, care workers who form the backbone of our health and social care systems are increasingly caught in the crossfire. Many of our members, a significant number of whom are from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds, have reported a disturbing increase in fear and concern for their safety, as well as that of those they care for. This is not merely about discomfort; it’s about being able to perform life-saving duties under the threat of violence and aggression.
The CWU sees these riots as a severe threat to the societal fabric, exacerbated by dangerous narratives and policies endorsed by political and media figures over many years. These narratives not only fuel division but actively compromise the safety and effectiveness of those committed to caring for our society’s most at risk.
We demand immediate and decisive action against this wave of hatred and violence. This involves not only strong condemnations but also clear, concrete steps by political leaders to dismantle the systemic racism embedded within our institutions. The scapegoating of migrants, Muslims, and people of color must end. We call for a radical shift towards policies that uphold the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Employers and management in all sectors must urgently reinforce safety protocols, ensuring that care workers can perform their critical roles without fear. This includes robust support systems and immediate responses to any threats against care workers’ safety.
The CWU stands resolute in solidarity with all who are affected and calls upon our members, allies, and the public to unite against this resurgence of hate. We will coordinate with community leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to advocate for policies that protect and honor the invaluable contributions of care workers.
Together, we will overcome this climate of fear and intimidation. Our collective action will forge a path towards a society where care workers are safe and valued, and where solidarity triumphs over division.
